One Bad Rhino have received and installed the J Strong roof and let me tell you it is better than I expected. I will be posting some actual photos soon.  Their roof is one of the biggest hits yet.  It includes 4 55w Halogen off road lights and the ability to ad a CD player to it so you can roll with tunes while on the trail!  One Bad Rhino's Yamaha Rhino web forum has been see a lot of action about this roof.  I am excited to get it installed and put it to use.  In my opinion this is by far the best roof I have seen yet!

Looking at the quality of these roofs you can bet that you would not find any of these on the used market. Base on the price at ATV Direct I have to say for what you get and what you can do to add to this roof I can't see any other option. Just think about it...you get 4 55watt lights, the ability to add a stereo/CD player and four...yes four speakers and not to mention it allows you the ability to add a backup light. A couple other things I noticed is the driver and passenger sides entry. If you look carefully you can see the roof doesn't reduce you head room. I am a big fan of this because you can still put doors on it without the roof interfering with it (J Strong is in the process of producing the new doors as we speak.  One last though. Most roofs sell for about $250 and this is just a roof. Then if you wanted to add a speaker bar you would be in it for another $220, even then you still have to mount a stereo somewhere and this will take up some valuable room in the cockpit area.  Most stereo mounts cost $29-$55. So best case you are sitting at about $500. Now this price doesn't even include the lights and you still have to mount them. Lights bars are about $150 to as high as $250. So you can see these items just start to add up and in my opinion your Rhino looks like an erector set. J-Strong’s roof incorporates all these items in what I think are a perfectly engineered modular roof. You get everything in one shot...   www.onebadrhino.com is growing and will hopefully help in making your decision in what products to buy.

J Strong Roof

My thoughts first and then a nice write up on the install.

I chose J-Strong's Roof because of its all in one design.  I mean look at it what a perfect fit.  The roof was even better than what I had anticipated.  The design is superb and the CD player they sell is a great powerhouse for listening to your favorite tunes.  I followed their very detailed instructions and everything installed as described. The speakers are great and the sound quality is awesome!

I am a huge fan of hidden wires and the clean look.  They get an A+ in this area because everything is hidden in the roof. There are no external wires and to add one little One Bad Rhino add on I drilled a 3/8 in hole in the roll cage above the grab handle on the passenger side and then used a coat hanger to grab the wire and pull it through.  The exit point is the drain hole at the bottom of the roll cage right by the section where Yamaha bolted the cage together.

Pre-Installation Tips -

  1. Have all your tools ready to go
  2. Read all directions
  3. Cut away from you when cutting
  4. DON'T BE DRILL CRAZY ONLY DRILL THROUGH ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE LAYER YOU ARE DRILLING THROUGH
  5. When in doubt go back to the directions
  6. Measure, measure, measure!
  7. Use sharp blades and bits

Mounting the Lights - Do this before installing anything else. I used the pattern sent by J Strong and it work just perfectly. Make sure if you drill pilot holes that you don't drill all the way through!! When you unscrew the lights from the mounting brackets KEEP THEM TILTED BACK SO THE NUT STAYS IN PLACE OR YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE APART THE LIGHT TO PUT THEM BACK INTO PLACE. After mounting the brackets you can center the hole for the wiring. I placed light into the bracket so the hole for the wiring is located directly behind and center behind the light. Follow the J Strong directions here and use the recommended drill bit to get a clean fit. To install the lights feed the wires through first then screw the lights into the mounting brackets. You can use a little lock tight here to prevent them from backing out. (Do this after you bolt the roof on the Rhino and have power) To get the right lighting pattern pull your Rhino up to the wall and  see where your lights are hitting. I positioned my lights so that the outside lights aimed a little higher than the inside lights or the lights closest to the center. I tightened them up and I am ready to go.

Speaker installation - I recommend using a Dremel tool to cut out the speaker holes. In this step it is very important to not make the hole to large because it will make it difficult to mount the speaker.  If the hole is too big it will just fall right through.  I learned this from prior speaker installations in my old 69' VW.  SO DON'T MAKE THE HOLE TOO BIG!!!! Anyway you should use a cutting disk to get the best results... in my opinion. THIS NEXT STEP IS CRUCIAL SO PAY ATTENTION!  Take the speaker and the speaker shroud and then drill a small pilot hole so you get a perfect fit.  Then remove the speaker and place the metal backing screw anchors in place and then hook up the speaker and then by hand screw it into place.  BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SLIP OFF AND JAM THE SCREWDRIVER THROUGH THE SPEAKER.  DO THIS BY CUPPING YOUR HAND AROUND IT.  Repeat this for each speaker. OH one last thing DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SPEAKER SCREWS OR YOU MIGHT CRACK THE PLASTIC!

The Radio/CD Player - Make sure and use the marine cover to guide your cut for the radio so that you don't get an over hanging marine cover. I used a box knife to cut this...MAKE SURE TO CUT AWAY FROM YOU AND BE VERY CAREFUL.  YOU WILL NEED A VERY SHARP NEW BLADE. You can cut this with a Dremel if you score a good outline of the inside of the marine cover.  Then remove the marine cover and then Dremel it. You want to make sure you don't leave the marine cover on it when cutting it with the Dremel or you could cut into the marine cover. GOOD TIP make sure to read the stereo directions and hook all you wiring up before you install the stereo. This will save you a ton of time.

Antenna Mount - You can mount the antenna anywhere you want, so I installed it in the center of the top and towards the back. Make if you do this to allow for enough room for you to be able to put the nut and the antenna. Make sure you measure it out because once you make the hole it is done. I recommend that you mount it above the deeper part of the box area in the back, if you decide to mount it on top. You can mount it underneath or really where ever you want.

Wiring - I used 16 gauge wiring and then had to go back and replace it with 10 Guage wiring SO USE USE 10 GAUGE FROM THE START. There are a couple options here and this is what I did. I connected the stereo's orange and yellow wires to the main positive wire RED. The stereo itself is wired into the harness so it will have main power through that. The orange and yellow wires provide memory power and stereo lighting power. Use proper connectors so you have a clean connection. On the battery end I used water proof connectors to connect the power to the battery (1/4 inch round connectors) and for the ground. So anyway this worked great for me.

The Roofs Construction

Once I receive the J Strong roof I took it out of the box and looked it over. They did not miss a trick. The quality is unmatched and the seam around the top is top notch! The material is really tough. All the hardware is a perfect fit and I had no problems with any missing hardware.  Once I mounted the the roof it was not going anywhere. This one solid roof for my One Bad Rhino.

I took my time and made sure to do everything with care I didn't want to scrape it up while working on it, I want to do that on the trail. Look for photos in the next month.

 J Strong Protective Rear Bumper

As a start I have one word "TANK".  This bumper is solid, I can stand on it and bounce up and down and it doesn't even flex one bit. It has 8 points that anchor this bold guy to my Rhino. There is no clanking here. Once you mount it, it is solid. This thing make you want to back into something just because you can. All the welds are supper clean and well anchored.

Pre-Installation Tips -

  1. Have all your tools ready to go

  2. Read all directions

  3. Use metal drill bits

  4. Make sure nothing is in the bed

  5. When in doubt go back to the directions

  6. Follow the directions

Mounting It - Clean, easy and simple. I followed the directions and they were spot on. The biggest tip I can throw at you here is after you mount the brackets to the bumper and then slide it on the pivot point and then replace the cotter keys. Don't forget to bend the cotter keys back after you replace them.  J Strong says to drill the one hole into the bed and then snug it up and then drill the other three mounting holes in the bed. This worked great!! I did it and then it was secure. The hardware they sent was a perfect fit and all pieces were there.

When mounting the tail light guards drop the tail gate and follow the directions. Make sure not to tighten the bolts until all of them are threaded and into place. this will allow you to better line them up. I say this only because you might need to move it a 1/8 inch to get a clean drop in of the bolts. The fit is perfect!! I then went around and tightened all the bolts and nuts and added some lock tight. In the end this thing is ready to smash away.

Installation time 15-20 minutes

 J Strong Fold Down Windshield

This is a sweet addition to my One Bad Rhino. I have to say I love the fold down option since I ride in all kinds of environments. This will be great on those hot days where the bugs are on a full assault of my face. It will also be nice when riding with others. A rock in the face can ruin a good day of riding. The design is well built and looks like it is engineered to take a beating. In just a second or two literally you can drop the window and grab a cool breeze. One to the installation.

Pre-Installation Tips:

  1. Leave the protective plastic coating on until you are finished with the installation

  2. Read all directions

  3. Screw the clamps on the roll cage before you mount them to the window, this will help shape them and make it easier to install later

  4. When in doubt go back to the directions

Installation time 10-15 minutes
